Sliding Door Sills Should NEVER be above the floor!

I see this so often in luxury homes and it just takes a little expert planning to avoid. Hurricane rated sliding door sills are often 3" tall for water resistance and need to be set into a depression, but your ceiling needs to die into the top frame...

Knowing exactly how your flooring should die into every frame type is critical as sliding doors, hinged doors, floor to ceiling windows all have different sill and frame heights. Depending on your flooring type and thickness you will need to depress into the slab (or raise up windows on a curb).

Slab variation may be as much as 3/4” to 1-1/2” which is going to affect the final level of your flooring and likely be higher at the perimeter than expected.

I help architects and builders plan for this kind of detail coordination with flooring, ceilings, counter tops, pockets, stone and wood cladding.
