Pocket Sliding Door Layout

You can draw anything, it doesn't' mean it's right!

I see sliding door layouts drawn by architects incorrectly all the time and it creates mass confusion. Pocket sliding doors are one of the most complex window and door conditions with so many factors to consider that are often not detailed at all.

- What is the manufacturer's Pocket Hook frame detail?

- How does it attach and how will your wall finishes return to it?

- Will the sliding door you are using fully pocket or stick out when open?

- Do you have enough depth in the pocket for the panels to fully recess?

- Do you have enough width for the track and any protruding frame parts?

- How and when is the inside of your exterior wall being finished?

- Is there a pocket closer to hide the open pocket and how is the interior wall finishing to it?

- How is the water being contained inside the pocket if the track fills with water in heavy rains so it doesn't enter the house?

- Where is your recess and edge of slab? How is the exterior flooring coming into the bottom of the track?

- Is the corner column sized and positioned correctly?

- Where and how wide is your overhead beam?

I help architects, builders, and owners select, specify, and detail luxury residential hurricane glazing systems without manufacturer or dealer biases. I also give classes in all aspects of hurricane windows and doors on glass aesthetics and energy performance, manufacturer product overviews, detailed installation planning and best practices, and understanding hurricane product approvals.
