POCKET SLIDING DOORS everywhere!
I did this house a decade ago with six 20' x 11' pocket sliding doors and three other doors all AUTOMATED just on the first floor. I have done HUNDREDS of them and they are one of the most challenging conditions for an architect and builder in the hurricane zone.
- Will the doors fully pocket flush?
- How deep does the pocket need to be (hint - you probably need over a foot extra in addition to panel width)
- This is the "easiest" condition to motorize but you need ANOTHER foot of depth in the pocket
- What is your interior wall condition (please do NOT enclose it in masonry, installers have to work inside that pocket)
- How wide is the track and recess?
- Where is your beam located and is it wide enough?
- What is the exterior flooring finish and how and where will it meet the track?
- What kind of connection does the manufacturer use to attach to the wall?
- Do you have a transom above? If so, where is the steel beam located and how does that window finish to the pocket wall?
- Do you have an overlapping pocket condition in the same wall?
I help architects, builders, and owners select, specify, and detail luxury residential hurricane glazing systems without manufacturer or dealer biases. I also give classes in all aspects of hurricane windows and doors on glass aesthetics and energy performance, manufacturer product overviews, detailed installation planning and best practices, and understanding hurricane product approvals.
