Another installment of Bad Installs - Structural Mullions

In a hurricane zone there is a critical missing element here, a structural mullion. Steel or aluminum structural mullions are installed before the windows and doors and must be engineered to meet the calculated wind loads for the structure and the opening.

Aluminum tube mullions will have their own hurricane product approvals filed with the State of Florida Building Department (FPA) or Miami Dade (NOA) and must be anchored in accordance with that testing.

This may be fine if you never have winds above 20-30 mph but in storm force winds, this will likely blow out.

I help architects, builders, and owners select, specify, and detail luxury residential hurricane glazing systems without manufacturer or dealer biases and give classes to educate on glazing systems and glass energy performance and aesthetics.
